Indoors※
*8:30~17:30 men only. 17:31~8:29 mixed bathing for overnight guests
Legend has it the Tengu thermal spring was first discovered around 770, making it the original Kita Onsen bath. It is said an angry Tengu threw a huge boulder into the air and when it crashed to earth boiling water spurted forth. The boulder is still there. See if you can find it! (hint: near the Onsen Pool) and the thermal water has flowed ever since. Bathe under the watchful eye of the huge Tengu mask, one of the biggest you will see in Japan. The present mask is the second generation made in 2023. Next door is the Utase-yu (Fudo-no-yu) where jets of hot water cascade from pipes in the ceiling. Direct these onto shoulders, hips, knees and other areas for pinpoint relief of aches and pains. Next to Utase-yu is a small family bath with locking door for privacy.
