Menoyu
was originally famous for curing eye diseases,
(me is Japanese for eye).
Around 1600 the local
daimyo (lord or duke),
Ozeki, took possession of the land
and built a palace for his daughter here.
The bath was then made into the princesses private bath,
and after became known as Himenoyu
(hime is Japanese for princess).
